The special exhibition 《Wholeness Within: The True Self》 is based on the stories of the artists introduced in the November 2022 Dong-A article “Female painters who shed their husbands’ shadow and emerged as their perfect selves.” This exhibition brings together artists who went beyond the evaluation of being wives and assistants of famous painters in the male-dominated Korean art world of the 1960s and 1970s and displayed their unique world of artworks until old age, and examines their sincere and intense passion for their artworks and their attitude toward life.
The term “Wholeness Within: The True Self” implies that women are not defined as someone’s wife or mother, or as assistants to others, but rather find their own unique identity as themselves. However, paradoxically, this term implies a passive view that women were not fully independent or properly recognized. Most of the Korean art world in the 20th century was led by male artists, and women were only a minority. Social prejudice played a greater role in this than the biological conditions of women. Since the 2000s, there have been continuous attempts to reexamine modern and contemporary female artists, find neglected aspects, and establish their place in art history. But even if that is the case for seniors over 70 years old, can we still universally apply the perspective of a ‘Wholeness Within: The True Self’ as an independent entity to later generations? This exhibition not only reexamines senior female painters, but also introduces female artists who are struggling to develop self-consciousness for their own artistic world today, and seeks to think about what it means to pursue ‘Wholeness Within: The True Self’ in this era.
