작가 신현경

색연필을 이용한 섬세한 드로잉으로 축적된 삶의 경험을 그려내는 작가는 이번 전시에서 < 충만한 초록 >(2024)을 비롯해 57점을 소개한다. 삶의 경험과 자연과의 교감을 통해 얻은 영감을 추상적인 풍경화로 재구성하는 작가는 자신에게 주어진 소명, ‘그림 그리는 일’을 성실하고 정직하게 해오고 있다. 미술대학 졸업 후 출산 및 육아로 10년 공백기를 거친 그는 90년대 초 작업을 재개한 후 10여 년간 판화 작업에 매진하다, 10여 년 전부터 종이에 바느질과 색연필 드로잉 작업을 시작했다. 단단한 판화지 위에 작고 세밀한 바늘땀을 반복적으로 이어가거나 섬세한 색연필 선들로 메우고 확장하는 방식의 작업을 지속하고 있다. 작가는 번쩍이지 않고, 담담하고 바랜듯한 표면을 그려내는 색연필이 자신의 정서와 닮아있다고 고백한다.

작가의 화폭은 땀땀이 잇고 칸칸이 메워지는 색연필 선들이 겹겹이 쌓이고, 층층이 덮여가는 색들은 다른 색으로 옮아가며 구성된다. 자신의 작품활동을 ‘내게로 온 모든 상황과 작용해 흔적을 남겨가는 과정’으로 밝히며 작가는 종이와 연필이 만나 들숨, 날숨이 만드는 조용한 역동에 이끌러 이미지가 창조된다고 설명한다. 동일한 폭과 길이의 색 줄무늬들이 교차하면서 만들어내는 반복들은 화폭에 숨, 호흡을 부여한다. 일정한 간격으로 지속되는 견고한 단위들은 작가의 간절함이자 묵도이다. 이렇듯 작가의 작업은 자기 절제를 시험하는 행위이며, 작가의 의지와 소명을 천명하는 수행의 과정이다.

Artist Shin Hyunkyoung

The artist, who draws her accumulated life experiences through delicate drawings using colored pencils, introduces 57 artworks including (2024) in this exhibition. The artist, who reconstructs the inspiration from life experiences and communication with nature into abstract landscape paintings, has been faithfully and honestly carrying out the ‘drawing work’ given to her. After graduating from art college and taking a 10-year hiatus due to childbirth and childcare, she resumed her artwork in the early 1990s. After that, she devoted herself to engraving for about 10 years, and started sewing and drawing colored pencils on paper more than a decade ago. She continues to work by repeatedly connecting small and detailed stitches on solid print paper or filling and expanding with delicate colored pencil lines. The artist confesses that colored pencils, which do not flash but draw a plain and faded surface, resemble her emotions.

The artist’s canvas is composed of layers of colored pencil lines that are filled with sweat and sweat, and the colors that are covered layer by layer are transferred to other colors. The artist, who describes his creative activities as ‘a process of interacting with all situations that come to me and leaving traces,’ explains that images are created by the quiet dynamics created by the inhalation and exhalation of paper and pencil. The repetitions created by the intersection of colored stripes of the same width and length give breath and breathing to the canvas. The solid units that continue at regular intervals are the artist’s earnestness and silence. As such, the artist’s work is an act of testing self-control and a process of practice that declares the artist’s will and calling.
